What Children Can Do

1. Even when they are very young, children pretend to read and write. For example, they can turn the pages of a book and create a story based on the book's pictures.

2. Once they are preschoolers, children can understand that the printed or written word stands for something. For example, preschool children can find their favorite cereal by looking at the front of the box.

3. Older toddlers and most preschoolers may know some names of letters or the sounds that letters make.

5. You should encourage school aged children to occasionally read books to the younger children.
