Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5

Writing Activity

Arranging the space you have set up for your family child care program and making sure that it is fresh and exciting for the children in your care is a difficult task. Sometimes it is hard to know whether they are using the different learning areas and materials appropriately. On of the ways that you can figure this out is to set time aside to observe children during free play.

  1. Take out new materials for children to include in the block area. Introduce the new materials to the children during your morning circle.
  2. Observe toddlers and/or preschoolers playing in the block area during free play. Take notes while you are watching.
  3. Open your word processor and describe what happened. For example, "Charlie built a fence with blocks and placed the plastic animals inside the fence. He counted the animals before he placed them inside the fenced area."
  4. Save your observations in your disk portfolio. You will need it later.
