Module 6: Curriculum Planning
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5

Learning Activity

Below is an example of a schedule. For the next activity you will read and analyze it to see if you can improve it. Can you give good reasons for why you would change some times or the order of activities?

  1. Read about how to make a good schedule by going to the following Web page: http://www.preschoolbystormie.com/schedulehelpr.htm
  2. Then use the suggestions from the Web page to help you decide why you would change two things about the schedule below and type them in the spaces under the schedule.
    Time Activity
    8:00 Arrival
    8:15-9:00 Morning meeting or Circle
9:00-9:30 Art project and table toys
9:30-10:30 Free play: children choose from 4 activity areas
    10:30-10:45 Bathroom and hand washing
    10:45-11:00 Morning snack
    11-11:30 Story
    11:30-12:00 Playground/outdoor time
    12-12:15 Bathroom and hand washing
    12:15- 12:30 Lunch
12:30- 1:00 Free play: children choose from 6 activity areas
    1-3:00 Nap time
    3:00- 3:15 Afternoon snack
    3:15-4:00 Afternoon art project
4-5:00 Free play: children choose from 3 activity areas
    5-5:30 Departure

1. What is the first thing you would change? Explain why. For example, I would change amount of time for morning circle time because it is too long for children to sit.

2. Identify another thing you would change. Why?

Writing Activity

Imagine that you have a child in your classroom, named Lourdes, whose parents are going to have a baby soon. You can tell by her comments during circle time that she is very concerned and excited about the news. How would you help this child (and probably many more of her friends) prepare for this change?

Write a paragraph that would describe some of the curriculum you could plan around this topic area. Areas that you might want to include are:

  • What changes would you make to your classroom environment? For example, what props would you add to the housekeeping area?
  • What materials could help you in making the child feel more comfortable preparing for this change in his/her life?
  • What large and small group activity could you develop that would support this child and family?
  • How would you let the parents know that the child is concerned? What help would you offer them?

This is how much of Module 6 you have completed:
