Use transition words to make your writing clear

Transition words and phrases can help make what you write clear to the person who is reading. This is especially true if you are writing a paragraph.

For example, which one of the following instructions sounds better and is easier to understand:

  1. Get your children's attention. Start to read using interesting sounds and different voices. Ask children questions.
  2. First, get the children's attention. Then, start to read using interesting sounds and different voices. While you are reading, ask children questions.

You probably think number two is the better of the two. The words first, then, and while make the order clear and tell you when the next step ends and the other begins.

Next After Another When Last of all
