The Past Tense

When an action or situation starts and finishes at a specific point in time in the past, we use the past tense. To change a regular verb to the past, add ed to the end.

Present: Usually Andres and Maria turn the pages of a book together.

Past: Yesterday Maria turned the pages and Andres watched.

Some verbs, called irregular verbs, do not use ed at the end.

Present: Most children hold pencils in their right hand.

Past: Joachim held his pencil in his left hand.
